David Foxton Playwright
David Foxton is the pen name of David Wood.
David's plays, several of which are published, cover a range of styles, subjects and scales from large scale full length plays for family audiences through to one act plays for adult and young performers. Most of David’s plays were premiered by Dewsbury Arts Group and all have been performed across the UK as well as in Canada, USA, Australia and New Zealand. A number of his one act plays won awards through their being performed across the UK in a wide range of drama festivals. After the Picnic (1984), Death of a Huntsman (1990) and Kenneth (1991) all won the George Taylor Memorial Award for the best new one act play. Magdalene (2001) received the Nan Nuttall Memorial Award for the best new play for young performers. Caught on the Hop and Think Tank were also shortlisted for these awards. Breakfast for One was ‘highly commended’ by the Geoffrey Whitworth Award in 2001. Be Serious was the joint winner of the BBC Radio Leeds Playwrighting Competition in 1987.
Productions of David’s plays have also received awards and critical acclaim. Gunfight at Monopoly End was selected as the most original Christmas show by the Yorkshire Evening Post and praised as “the outstanding seasonal production”. The Yorkshire Post also rated General Mousecatcher’s Last Stand as “a sure fire winner in every sense of the word”.
David’s play for young performers have been performed extensively by schools, colleges and youth groups. The wide range of styles and subject matter make them popular with both teachers and young performers. A number have been previously published individually and in anthologies, including Sepia and Song which contains four documentary / period plays for young performers – “A lovely collection of plays and a great find, highly recommended for GCSE/A Level drama students if you are a drama teacher.”
